With a total of 23 Olympic medals, Michael Phelps holds the record of having earned the highest number of medals to his name. Michael Phelps, also known as, “The Most Decorated Olympian of all Times”, has been a remarkable swimmer throughout his career. He has set a benchmark rather high for all the future swimmers due to his portrayal of his outstanding skills. It would be safe to say that the man himself is indeed a super human and essentially the “Lionel Messi” of swimming!
However, what exactly makes him so special? How does he manage to win swimming races so efficiently and effortlessly? Many have pointed out the fact that it could be because of his ever so great physique, and they are not wrong:
Michael’s height is 6’4”, which apparently is the ideal height for swimming. To be able to produce ones best, it is very important for the person to be physically able to produce the goodness. As for swimming, all that comes from the height of the person.
His wingspan is that of 6’7” which is 3 inches longer than his height. For any normal human, their reach is the same as that of their height, but that’s not the case of the extraordinary man we are talking about! Thus, that’s what makes his arms move about much more efficiently than his competitors.
His torso is 6’8”, which is insanely long! This gives him enormous reach compared to his competitors which helps him to propel through the water at a much faster rate. He is able to cover more area with every stroke of his than any normal human.
- Lower Body:
Although his lower body is surprisingly shorter at 5’10”, this actually serves as an advantage to him. This is because the resistance to water is much lesser because his lower body is much shorter.
- Palms and Feet:
Phelps has huge arms which helps him in paddling faster. His foot size is 14 which is again very long. Thus, his feet act as flippers and allows him to swim more smoothly and also a lot quicker. He also has flexible ankles that again aids a faster approach to his swimming.
- Lactic Acid:
When a physical activity is performed by a human body, it produces lactic acid. This causes fatigue (tiredness) in the body and slows down the muscle contraction. It has been scientifically proven that Phelps body produces only half the amount of lactic acid his rivals have to fight, thus he has a faster recovery time!
However, it’s not all about genetics. Reaching a certain level in your career, requires a lot of dedication and hard work – which Phelps never forgot! He never gave up his dream, desire to win and the thought of always being at the top. He spent long hours of his day in the pool practicing to only get better and better. It’s no joke being Michael Phelps, but nothing is impossible – will power and hard work is all that you truly need!
